Our Story

In 2005, two residents of Eastlake appealed to the Pinellas County Commission to have their community’s one exit have a traffic light installed. Being unsuccessful they (John Miolla and Jim McDonald) started an effort to organize the communities in the unincorporated area of North Pinellas County. Within twelve months the Council of North County Neighborhoods (CNCN) was formed. More than twenty of the largest communities in Palm Harbor on both sides of Lake Tarpon joined CNCN to advocate for them with County and State governments.

The first effort of the Council was to help resolve flooding in the Tarpon Woods community. After several years of meetings and studies, the Council was successful in getting two million dollars from State and County governments to help resolve the flooding issues.

The next major issue was Florida Senate Bill 1892, preventing involuntary annexation of any area of Eastlake without a vote of all registered voters in Eastlake. This legislation passed in 2012.

Other accomplishments over the years include the establishment of the Eastlake Overlay, which places restrictions

on which businesses can be located in the Eastlake corridor as well as many other restrictions protecting the scenic corridor. In 2019 The Council was finally successful in getting traffic signation at the Crescent Oaks entrance/exit.

CNCN has been instrumental regarding numerous other issues including resolving flooding on Old Keystone Rd, implementing zoning changes protecting over-development of the area, and working with the School Board, County and DOT to have street lighting installed at East Lake High School. CNCN continues to support multiple local charities including the “Build a Bed” organization, the FEAST Food Bank and the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch.
